Int. Diner - MOrning
A fork smushes down on a plate of scrambled eggs.
A warm ambient light fills the familiar diner.
Sitting on opposite sides of the booth are OBERON and PETER.
Oberon, mid 30s, has a calm and confident demeanor. He
has wire-framed glasses.
Peter, also mid 30s, with a dad bod.
Oberon
How many times do I have to say it,
you don’t have to put Charlotte in.
Peter
She wasn’t too bad today.
OBERON
(chuckles)
Which part wasn’t bad, her picking
dandelions at midfield, or when she
scored an own goal.
PETER
But did you see that kick? One hell
of a leg for a 6 year old. We just need
to tap that potential.
OBERON
I think we need to find her potential
in a new activity. Something not
involving running, or
teammates...or outdoors.
PETER
Oh, she’s a cute kid.
OBERON
She gets it from her mother, I assume.
I guess with adoption you never know.
A waiter comes by with coffee.
Their face obscured by the frame.
Oberon
Thanks.
The waiter pours Peter’s cup.
PETER
Thanks.
And then Oberon’s.
OBERON
Thank you.
The waiter exits frame.
PETER
She still good to sleep over tonight?
OBERON
If you want to take my kid for
the night, please.
They take a sip of their coffee.
HARD CUT TO:
INT. DUNGEON - NIGHT
Match cut, but now the two men sit opposite, but now faced
away from eachother in a dark and dingy basement.
They have both been roughed up, as if
they were dragged for miles.
A wet, distant DRIP ticks like a clock.
Dogs start sporadically barking in the background, off screen.
Then —
Oberon GASPS awake.
Noticeably without glasses.
He jolts against a metal chair, but can barely move. Rope bind
his wrists. A cloth is tied across his mouth. He starts
to make muffled noises through the gag.
Across the room, Peter let's out a groan as he slowly comes
to. Same chair, restraints, gag.
Oberon hears Peter and turns around,
shouting through the gag louder.
Peter comes to as he hears Oberon, albeit slowly. He
eventually turns around to see Oberon.
They stare at each other.
Neither understands where they are.
Between them, on the floor, is a knife.
Oberon sees the knife out of the corner of his eye and turns
around the other way to get a better look.
Peter follow suit.
Then they notice something on the wall behind them.
A workbench adorned with scalpels, drills, knives,
and other torturous tools.
A light turns on, illuminating writing on the wall.
“Only one will leave”
Their eyes meet again.
For a moment, neither moves, eyes locked. Trying to
determine their next move.
Suddenly-
Peter begins to struggle, and starts rocking his chair.
The barking intensifies.
Peter throws his weight backwards. His chair rocks hard.
Once.
Oberon, realising what Peter is doing, panics
and starts to do the same.
Twice.
On the third try, Peter's chair tips.
He crashes backwards into the floor.
Oberon lands moments later.
They roll onto their sides.
The knife lies between them.
Peter in a determined frenzy starts to shuffle and
crawl towards the knife.
The barking continues. Distant, savage, relentless.
Oberon still somewhat in shock, takes a half second
to figure out what to do.
He attempts wrench himself free of the ropes binding him.
He glances at Peter.
Peter is still aggressively making his way to the knife,
though the chair and binding make it a struggle.
Oberon realizes that his leg is somewhat loose
He starts vigorously shaking it free.
Peter is getting close to the knife, appearing to
try grab it with his mouth.
A dog BARKS louder now.
Just before Peter gets there, Oberon frees his leg and uses it
to swing round and kick the knife into his hands
His fingers close around the knife.
Peter recoils.
Oberon cuts the rope around his wrists.
SNAP.
He breaks free.
He rips the gag from his mouth, gasping for air.
Peter thrashes against his chair, desperate. He tries
to speak through the gag.
Oberon stands up.
Peter eyes follow, angrily.
He's breathing hard.
Oberon looks at his friend on the ground.
Then at the knife in his hand.
Then at the warning on the wall.
He starts to move to help his friend.
Then —
The dogs stop barking.
A HEAVY CHAIN UNCOILS FROM ABOVE.
A mysterious box drops from the ceiling and stops inches
from Oberon’s face with a loud and jarring clang.
He recoils.
The box hangs there, swaying gently on the chain. Silence.
Oberon stares at it, breathing hard.
Peter mumbles urgently through the gag, begging him to hurry.
Oberon looks from Peter to the box.
The box swings.
Oberon reaches for it.
He opens the box.
Inside —
Oberon's glasses.
He takes them out and puts them on.
Behind the glasses are-
Photographs.
He picks them up and examines them.
His face changes.
Confusion first.
Then horror.
Peter watches him, terrified now for a different reason.
Oberon slowly lowers the photos.
He looks at his friend, and then the workbench.
He walks over and surveys the tools like a menu.
Something on the table catches his eye.
An old wooden baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire.
The dogs start barking once more.
Peter sees it too.
He starts shaking his head.
No.
Oberon picks up the bat.
Peter screams through the gag, muffled and animal.
Oberon walks toward him.
Peter thrashes violently, the chair scraping
and kicking beneath him.
Oberon stands over him.
For one second, he hesitates.
Then he raises the bat.
Peter’s eyes fill with rage. Betrayal. Panic.
Oberon swings.
The bat comes down hard.
Peter’s muffled scream cuts through the dungeon.
Oberon swings again.
And again.
The dogs keep barking.
The bat smushes down on scrambled brains.
CUT TO BLACK.
