THE HEEBIE JEEBIES

EXT. PARK - DUSK
The sun sets over a wide-open field.
In the far distance, a shape is running furiously.
As it gets closer, it becomes clear it’s a young woman.
She reaches the edge of the tree line and stops right in
the center of the frame.
The woman is hysterical.
CUT TO:
EXT. PARK - AFTERNOON
Suddenly, the black screen blooms into a
picturesque sunny afternoon.
In the center of the frame is DARLENE, the girl from earlier,
sits with her hands covering her eyes.
DARLENE
Can I open my eyes now?
BOBBY a dreamy boy next door type, with a letterman's jacket,
and a "College Contour" haircut sits across from her.
BOBBY, slowly reaches for a large razor-sharp knife.
SLICE!
An extreme close-up obscures the frame, as a knife slices
right through and red goo oozes out.
Darlene takes a big sniff.
DARLENE
Do I smell cherry pie?
BOBBY
Aw if you’ve already guessed the
surprise, you might as well
open your eyes.
She takes her hands off her eyes.
The couple sits on a red-and-white checkered picnic blanket
in the middle of a park.
BOBBY
I made it for you. Just
how you like it.
Darlene gives him a puppy-dog look.
DARLENE
That’s sweet, Bobby. But I've got
to save some room for supper, or else
mother will be none too pleased.
BOBBY
She sounds like a swell lady. I do
hope to meet her one day.
DARLENE
(Uncomfortably)
You will.
BOBBY
Soon?
Darlene deflects.
DARLENE
(playfully)
Oh all right mister. Just one bite.
He smiles.
He puts his fork into the pie and helicopters it to her mouth.
She takes a bite.
Bobby watches eagerly.
BOBBY
Worth it, wasn’t it?
She wipes the goo from her mouth.
As much as she tries to hide it, it’s
clear it was not worth it.
DARLENE
It was a sweet gesture.
She laughs.
He chuckles back.
BOBBY
There’s no pleasing you,
Darlene, is there?
She smiles.
DARLENE
Well, you certainly pleased me
with this keen picnic. It’s nice
and romantic out here all alone.
They scan the open space.
Something disturbing catches Bobby’s eye.
BOBBY
(scared)
What? What’s that out there?
Darlene turns her back on Bobby as she looks out.
DARLENE
What? Where?
Suddenly —
Bobby grabs her and tackles her to the ground.
Darlene is startled as he climbs on top of her.
He looks down at her and playfully smiles.
She smiles back.
BOBBY
You are one summer peach, Darlene.
DARLENE
Is this why you brought me out here?
BOBBY
I wouldn’t bring a girl like you
out here for this.
DARLENE
Then what is it?
BOBBY
I know it’s been just a few dates,
but I was hoping you’d... well, I wanted
to ask. Darlene, will
you be my steady?
DARLENE
Oh, Bobby. That’s very sweet.
Bobby looks disappointed.
BOBBY
But?
Darlene looks conflicted.
DARLENE
It’s just... well, you hardly know me.
BOBBY
I know you're the one and only for me.
He smiles at her.
She smiles back.
BOBBY
I love you, Darlene.
Ding.
Something changes in Darlene’s soft eyes. They become cruel.
DARLENE
I love you, Darlene.
Darlene mimes him.
Bobby is confused.
BOBBY
Huh?
Darlene responds in a slightly mocking tone.
DARLENE
Huh?
BOBBY
What are you doing?
DARLENE
What are you doing?
Bobby becomes slightly irritated.
BOBBY
Stop it.
Her tone becomes menacing.
DARLENE
Stop it.
BOBBY
Seriously.
DARLENE
Seriously.
BOBBY
Stop mimicking me.
DARLENE
I’m not the one mimicking.
Darlene lifts her right hand.
As if a string were wired directly into
his veins, Bobby follows.
BOBBY
What’s happening?
Darlene moves her hand to the side, reaching for something.
She closes her hand around nothing.
Bobby’s hand is compelled to mimic her motion, but instead
of grabbing nothing, he grabs the knife.
She smiles.
BOBBY
No. No. What are you doing? Stop it!
She ignores his pleas.
She brings her hand in front of her chest.
BOBBY
No. No, Darlene, I love—
SLICE!
She gestures as if stabbing herself.
His hand copies the motion.
We stay on her as we hear:
SLICE! SLICE! CRUNCH! SLICE!
She gleefully thrusts the invisible knife into her chest.
Bobby screams in horror as his blood mists onto Darlene.
Bobby collapses onto the blanket as Darlene gets up.
She laughs hysterically and stares directly into the camera,
as if inspecting the audience.
She then gets up frolics off into the woods.
